Requirements:
In order to rent a vehicle in Hungary you must be at least 21 years old, however age may vary depending on the category of vehicle you are planning to rent. You must have had your driver’s license for at least 1 year and most car suppliers require an international driver's license as well. Headlights are required to be on at all times when traveling outside of a city, high beam headlights are not allowed to be used in a city at anytime day or night. The use of a cell phone it prohibited unless using a hands free device. Hungary practices a zero tolerance policy when it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol, as if caught heavy fines and imprisonment could result.
Child Seats: Children smaller the 1.5 meters are prohibited from traveling in the front seat unless they are in a proper child seat for their age and weight and there is not a working airbag for that seat.
Children under the age of 12 years and smaller then 1.5 meters who are sitting in the back seat of the vehicle must be in a proper child seat suitable for their age and weight.
Speed Limits:
The speed limits for Hungary are as follows: Highways 130 km/h (80mph), city 50 km/h (31mph), open roads 90 km/h (55mph). Vehicles equipped with snow chains are prohibited from traveling faster then 50 km/h.
Rules of the Road:
Vehicles travel on the right side of road and turning right on red is illegal. If fined due to a traffic violation the fines are payable on the spot in local currency only or at post offices within 30 days of the violation.
Gas and Diesel:
The cost for unleaded gas and diesel is approx $5.6 USD per gal. You will find a majority of gas stations are open between the hours of 6am to 8pm with some highway stations open 24hrs.
Tolls:
Toll stickers are required for the M1, M3, M5 and M7. Stickers can be purchased for approx $7.50 - 21 USD depending on the duration selected (4 days, 1 week & 1 month) and are available at gas stations or highway stations throughout Hungary.
Parking:
Larger cities in Hungary have metered parking with a max limit of 2 hours. Parking is generally permitted on both sides of one-way streets and the right side of two-way streets. Please pay attention to parking signs in the area you are traveling.
